What Giving Tuesday means to us

As the season of giving approaches, many speculate about the significance of giving during this particular time of year. For us, the answer is simple: this is when our families need us most.

Giving Tuesday isn’t just your average call to action for the Ronald McDonald House Carolinas (RMHC) — it’s a culmination of the heartfelt gratitude our community pours into our mission throughout the year.

We celebrate this effort through Lights of Love, our beloved holiday event led by our Teen Leadership Board (TLB) cohort. Together, they rally teams to raise funds through a peer to peer fundraiser that provides comforts of home that some may take for granted — a hot meal, a warm place to rest, or fulfilling a child’s Christmas wish. Most importantly, they host an open house for everyone to experience our mission firsthand, and an opportunity to stand alongside families as they work through the healing process.

“Lights of Love is special because of the community,” Sheamus Schellinger, TLB Fundraising Chair, said. “The entire community has the opportunity to attend the Lights of Love event and celebrate the holiday season with the families. Everyone needs someone during the holiday season, especially the families at RMHC — so the fact that I, along with the Greenville community, get to be that someone for the families is incredible.”

RMHC interprets Giving Tuesday not only as an opportunity to give donations, but to give support to families who are going through some of the most difficult times of their lives. Attending this open house event means that you’re part of the RMHC family too, and when times are tough — family stays.

We invite the community to join us on Tuesday, December 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. for a festive evening complete with holiday sweets, cookie decorating, live music, gingerbread houses and even a visit from Santa!

This event is open to the public and free to attend — so mark your calendars! And if you’re interested in joining in on the fundraising competition, register today at rmhc-carolinas.org/events/lights-of-love/.
