Family Story: Liam & Gema & The Unforgettable Vacation

 In Family Stories

When nine-year-old Liam and his mother, Gema, arrived in South Carolina from Vera Cruz, Mexico, they never expected their visit to become, what they refer to as, a “transformative” journey. What started as a family vacation to see Liam’s grandmother in Myrtle Beach quickly turned into a life-changing medical stay. Born with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC), Liam’s condition had worsened over time despite initial reassurances from multiple doctors that surgery wouldn’t be necessary. As he grew older, his mobility declined, and soon, he reverted back to needing the same level of care he had as an infant. During their trip, Gema researched local hospitals and discovered that Shriners Hospital could offer Liam the specialized care he desperately needed. The doctors informed her that Liam would require seven surgeries on each leg and that their stay in the U.S. would need to be much longer than anticipated. That’s when they found the Ronald McDonald House.

Adjusting to life at the House was initially daunting, and neither Liam nor Gema knew what to expect, but it quickly became a second home. Gema, a naturally sociable person, built a close-knit community with other parents, even inspiring a small group of moms to join her in early morning exercise sessions and health

y eating habits. Gema shares that she never felt like an outsider; instead, she found comfort in shared experiences and the kindness of strangers who soon became friends. The RMHCC staff exceeded every expectation, offering more than just a place to stay—they provided warmth, love, and unwavering support. Both Liam and Gema asserted that they realized early on that the staff acts out of love and support for all of the families. Liam, too, embraced the experience, making friends, enjoying home-cooked meals, especially chicken alfredo and cake, and participating in fun activities like Science Night, which the Teen Leadership Board hosts. He even saw snow for the first time, which was magical for both him and Gema, who claims the experience “brought out her inner child.”

As Liam and Gema’s departure date approaches quickly, Gema reflects on the past five months with a whole heart. The people that Liam and Gema were when they arrived at the House are not the same ones leaving, but the bonds formed and the memories made will last a lifetime. Liam is excited to return home to his two older sisters and baby sister, but he knows this isn’t goodbye forever. In a year, they will be back for another round of procedures, exchanging plates and braces and possibly preparing for arm surgery. Until then, they carry with them the love, resilience, and deep gratitude for the home that welcomed them with open arms. For Liam and Gema, RMHC is more than just a place to stay—it’s a part of their story, one they will cherish forever.
