Learn What It’s Like For Families to Stay With Us

For families arriving at Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Carolinas, the journey often begins with uncertainty. Many have traveled internationally, are navigating a new hospital system, and are carrying the emotional weight of a child’s medical diagnosis. In the midst of appointments, procedures, therapies, and long days at the hospital, families are suddenly faced with another question: where will they stay?

For many first-time guests, the answer can feel overwhelming. Families often tell us they were nervous before arriving because they didn’t know what to expect. What many discover upon arrival is that RMHC is designed with one purpose in mind: providing a true home away from home for families with seriously ill children.

Families are referred to the House through one of our five partner hospitals when a child is receiving medical treatment in the area. Because demand often exceeds available rooms, there may be a waitlist before accommodations become available. Once a room is offered, our team works closely with families to ensure a smooth arrival and help them settle into their temporary home away from home.

Located just minutes from our five partner hospitals, the House keeps families close to the care their child needs while eliminating the stress of costly hotel stays and daily commutes. Instead of spending hours on the road, parents can focus on what matters most: being present for their child.

One of the biggest challenges families face during a medical crisis is managing everyday responsibilities while spending hours at the hospital. That’s why the House is designed with accessibility and convenience in mind.

Each evening, families are invited to enjoy a hot dinner prepared by volunteers, community groups, and corporate partners. In addition, guests have access to a community pantry stocked with snacks, beverages, and grab-and-go items that are available whenever they are needed. Whether a parent is heading to an early appointment or returning late from the hospital, food is readily available without the added stress of grocery shopping or meal preparation.

Families also have designated refrigerator and cabinet space to store personal groceries and household items. While hot meals are available each evening, families also have the flexibility to prepare familiar recipes or keep favorite foods on hand when they prefer. For many, these simple routines provide a comforting reminder of home during an otherwise unfamiliar season. Laundry facilities are available on-site, and a professional housekeeping team helps maintain guest rooms and common areas. These services allow families to spend less time managing daily chores and more time supporting their child.

Safety is another important part of the Ronald McDonald House experience. Every family is provided with a private guest room where they can rest, recharge, and spend time together. Access to the House is carefully monitored through guest sign-in procedures and secure key card entry, helping ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone staying at the House.

Beyond the practical amenities, many families are surprised by the sense of community they find here. It is not uncommon to see parents sharing dinner after long days at the hospital while children play together in the common areas, or families exchanging encouragement with someone who truly understands what they are experiencing. In a place where every guest is facing the uncertainty of a child’s illness or injury, simple conversations often become lasting friendships.

That sense of belonging is strengthened each day by volunteers who bring moments of joy and normalcy to the House. Holiday celebrations, therapy animal visits, movie nights, craft activities, and special events give families opportunities to laugh, connect, and create happy memories alongside the challenges of treatment. For many guests, the House becomes more than a temporary place to stay; it becomes a community that reminds them they are not facing their journey alone.

The Ronald McDonald House becomes much more than a place to stay. It becomes a place where everyday needs are met, where safety and comfort are prioritized, and where families find support from both staff and one another.

No family expects to need a Ronald McDonald House. But when medical challenges arise, having a place that provides accessibility, security, convenience, and community can make all the difference. For families arriving for the first time, they quickly discover that the House is more than lodging, it is a place that helps them focus on what matters most: being together.
