From Louisiana to the Carolinas: A Family Finds Comfort and Connection at RMHC

 In Uncategorized

Rhydonia and Charleigh have returned to our House with a mix of hope and excitement, ready for the next step in Charleigh’s treatment, and to reconnect with the House community. House guests Rhydonia and Charleigh are staying with us at the Ronald McDonald House from Louisiana until the first week of August while receiving care at Shriners Children’s Hospital.

Charleigh was born with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC), a condition that affects all four of her limbs and causes joint contractures. Over the years, she has undergone several surgeries to help straighten her limbs. This journey has brought Charleigh and her family to stay with us before – making this their second time in Our House. We’re grateful to welcome them back as Charleigh prepares for another procedure to remove hardware and receive treatment for a growth plate.

Beyond simply being a place to stay, the House has become a source of connection and comfort for Charleigh and Rhydonia. Charleigh especially enjoys spending time with other children who understand the challenges of a medical journey. While she cherishes her friends back home, she finds something uniquely comforting in being with peers who truly relate to her experience.

Rhydonia also values the opportunity to meet families navigating similar paths. Seeing others from across the country and world face challenges with resilience has been both moving and inspiring. Together, families offer support, share stories and build a sense of unity.

For Charleigh, one of the best parts of the House is the many ways to play. Her favorite spot is the inclusive swing on the playground. It gave her the chance to swing for the first time since she was a baby, and she loves it. She’s also excited about all the new friendships she’s made with staff, families, Teen Leadership Board members and therapy dogs. When she found out everyone would be back in the House soon, she exclaimed that she was “too excited.”

At RHMC of the Carolinas, Rhydonia and Charleigh truly found a home away from home. Here, they have found a community who understands their journey and uplifts and inspires one another which for Rhydonia and Charleigh, that’s what makes RMHC of the Carolinas so special.
