Rebecca: A story of mission and meaning coming full circle

 In Uncategorized

Hello! I’m Rebecca Deets, and over the last year I have had the amazing privilege of serving as the Communications and Development Intern here at the Ronald McDonald House of the Carolinas. I have been familiar with the Ronald McDonald House for my entire life, having stayed at the Chicago location when I was little to receive treatment for my Eosinophilic Esophagitis. When the opportunity opened up last spring to intern here, I knew it was an opportunity I couldn’t miss out on.

Through my time here I have learned so much about non-profit leadership and operations. It’s been amazing to be on this side of the events that I remember fondly and have the chance to provide a new generation of RMHC kids with the same remarkable memories I have. Over the past year I have gotten the opportunity to host brunches and parties for the kids, and every moment of planning and executing those events has been transformational. I’ve gotten to explore and learn more about business relations and fundraising, supporting efforts in operations and engagement for the House. I’ve helped host toy drives, create wishlists, participate in social media campaigns and learned how to create and maintain relationships with businesses within my community.

Through their focus in building confidence within the workplace, RMHC has grown my ability to pitch ideas, create and execute plans, and grow personal relationships in a professional environment. I have also learned many non-conventional, and unexpected, aspects of running a non-profit. Learning how to be adaptable, making do with what you have and thinking of ideas on the fly, is a vital aspect of running a successful event at a non-profit like RMHC. No two days ever looked the same, and that unpredictability taught me how to be flexible, creative and confident in my decision-making. Whether it was adjusting event plans at the last minute or finding new ways to engage donors and families, I learned how important it is to stay positive and solution-oriented.

Beyond the professional skills I’ve gained, the most meaningful part of my experience has been the relationships I’ve built. Getting to interact with the families and children staying at the House has been incredibly special to me, especially knowing that I was once in their shoes. Being able to give back to a place that provided my family with comfort during a difficult time has made this experience come full circle in a way I will always cherish.

There is something truly unique about the sense of community at the House. From staff to volunteers to families, everyone plays a role in creating a warm and welcoming environment. I have loved being part of a team that is so dedicated to making a difference in the lives of others, and it has inspired me to continue pursuing work that has a meaningful impact.

As my internship comes to a close, I am so grateful for everything this experience has given me. I am leaving not only with valuable professional skills, but also with a deeper understanding of compassions, resilience and service. The Ronald McDonald House will always hold a special place in my heart, and I am proud to have contributed to its mission.
